When was EMV 3DS 2.3 released and what does it mean?

Version 2.3 of EMV 3DS was released on October 6, 2021 by the Global technical body EMVCo. The objective of this new version is to lay enhancements on top of the existing EMV 3DS specifications that have been securing payments globally for over 20 years. These specifications aim to improve the consumer experience and capabilities to fight fraud for issuers, acquirers, and online merchants across different e-commerce channels and devices.

In detail, EMV 3DS 2.3 introduces major enhancements to increase the flexibility to optimize EMV 3DS implementation across multiple channels and devices. This helps issuers to identify fraudulent transactions in faster speed and increased accuracy, while streamlining the authentication process for consumers to enjoy an improved payment experience.

What are the key updates?

Enhanced flexibility to support different technical setups

The newly introduced Split-SDK model with multiple variants makes it easier for EMV 3DS implementation across traditional and non-traditional payment channels and devices in e-commerce, namely smart speakers or common IoT devices.

Support for additional authentication approaches for enhanced security

The EMVCo has been collaborating with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the FIDO Alliance to support WebAuthn (Web Authentication) and SPC (Secure Payment Confirmation) that issuers and online merchants can leverage within the 3DS flow to better reduce risk of fraud.

Streamlined consumer authentication

  • Supports device binding, enabling the devices to remember the consumer, hence reducing the need for an authentication challenge in the future.
  • Out-of-band (OOB) transitions can now be automated, helping the consumer to seamlessly switch between the merchant and authentication application.
  • More recurring transaction data and EMV Payment Token data are added, helping issuers to better identify transactions, leading to a simplified authentication for future purchases.
